One of the hardest things for students to do is deal with their feelings. We all have different feelings that we experience everyday. At times, we may feel happy, sad, confused, angry and have many other feelings. Although it is okay to feel the way that we do, it is not okay for us to hurt or harm someone else because of the way that we feel. If you are having a hard time with your feelings, there are a lot of things that you can do. You can.:

1. Talk to someone about how you are feeling (your parents, a friend, a teacher, a school counselor).
2. Write about your feelings in a journal.
3. Draw a picture that shows how you are feeling.
4. Count to 10 to calm down if you are feeling angry.

What are some other ways that you can think of to deal with your feelings?

Dear Students,

Bullying behavior a serioius problem in schools across the nation. Bullying behavior can take place through actions, words, and/or physical contact. Often children are unaware of how harmful the things that they are doing or saying is to others. When students experience bullying behavior it is not always easy to discuss this with someone. If you or someone that you know is experiencing bullying behavior here are some things that you can try.

1. Use “I messages” to speak up for yourself and let the other person know how you feel.
(example: “I feel sad when you call me names because it hurts my feelings. Please do not call me names anymore.”)

2. Remove yourself from the situation.

3. Stay with a friend. (Make sure that you are in an area where you are not by yourself.)

4. Tell an adult. ( You can talk to your teachers, counselors, other school staff members and/or your parents)

For more information on how to deal with bullying behavior see the following website: http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/emotion/bullies.html

What do you think about bullying behavior?

Fifth grade parents and students,

Next school year you will be going to middle school and there is a lot you will have to do to be prepared. Here are a few tips that middle school teachers want you to know.

1. When reading, read for information. Be sure to pick out what is important.
2. Work on vocabulary words. This will help you when become a better reader and writer.
3. Use a “pre-writing” sheet to help organize your thoughts and information. Make sure that you are able to use facts to come up with a conclusion.
4. Learn how to take notes. Most teachers at Campbell Middle School use the Cornell note taking technique. Cornell Note Taking
5. Make sure you know your multiplication facts. It is difficult to learn other concepts in math if you do not know how to multiply.
6. Practice copying information from the board. This will be important because many of the notes you will take in middle school will be on the board.
7. When you are reading books be sure that you understand what you are reading.
8. Use dividers, binders, and folders so that you can organize your work.
9. Practice good listening and skills. (Paying attention in class. Not talking while a teacher is talking)

How do you feel about starting middle school?
